Quantitative Group (QG) provide specialised training in geostatistics, resource estimation, risk analysis and management, grade control and sampling. QG's training is designed to transfer skills and concepts to participants, to be interesting and topical, to connect with professionals by being relevant and to be scientifically sound. QG staff have run over 150 training programs both in-house and as public courses.

New professional development courses for 2009 – is training even more important during downturns?

QG are pleased to announce the continuation of our highly successful Professional Development program for 2009. Due to the increased breadth of skills demanded of mining professionals, QG has revamped our existing Professional Development programs this year as well as broadening the scope of training courses offered.

According to Director John Vann, in the current environment ensuring people have the right combination of fundamental theory and practical application is essential to delivering successful training and development outcomes.

“Despite tighter margins that flow from lower commodity prices businesses sometimes forget to focus on the skills and development needs of their people.” John said. “In fact many businesses typically react to market downturns by limiting training opportunities for staff. In addition, it is inevitable that some sites will see technical staff numbers decline. So the job gets harder, but we have fewer (and perhaps less experienced) people. More enlightened management will appreciate that improving skills not only helps to deliver better financial outcomes, it also increases staff morale and productivity. Those employees finding themselves with extra responsibilities will need the right skills or knowledge to be successful.”

In summary: when margins are tight and operational pressures are high, well trained staff who understand the theory behind their application of the tools and practices used in their jobs are even more critical to business success and achieving stretch targets and goals. Recognising the needs of individuals, teams and managers QG has increased the range of public courses on offer in 2009. We also provide customised in-house training and mentoring programs designed to address the specific needs of our clients.

QG have an unmatched track-record in running training in the areas of resources, sampling, geostatistics, reconciliation and associated business skills. As well as our popular public courses in Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane, we have conducted technical in-house courses in the recent past for BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Olympic Dam, AngloGold Ashanti, Goldfields St Ives, Anglo Coal, Rio Tinto Exploration (Chile) and the Resolution Copper Company (Arizona), among others. QG have also conducted components of senior management education for mining companies in collaboration with Duke business school in the USA.

QG’s 2009 Professional Development program includes the following publicly courses:
Each program is presented by industry recognised experts with high quality teaching skills and hands-on experience in their respective discipline.

“QG’s high quality presenters understand that providing the best possible training experience is about more than simply standing in front of a PowerPoint slide show” John Vann said. “When we conduct training, our presenters draw from their extensive experience to illustrate the practical application and consequences of the key lessons. We encourage interaction and participation, discussing examples of problems (and potential solutions) from course attendees. By encouraging questions and delving deeper into areas of specific interest our training programs can connect more deeply with the needs of participants.” Consequently, QG’s training programs receive consistently high performance ratings from participants. On a scale of 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent) QG’s training programs are consistently rated by attendees at an average above 4.5 in terms of the quality of the program, the relevance of the content and the clarity of delivery.

To ensure the quality of our programs, positions for each course are limited so early bookings are recommended.
